In successfully lifting the illustrious World Cup trophy with the rest of the formidable German national team last summer, Bastian Schweinsteiger simply has to go down as one of the best players of his class currently operating in the modern game.

Joachim Low’s star-studded outfit, including the likes of Mesut Ozil, Philip Lahm, Mats Hummels and Manuel Neuer, all performed like a well-oiled clockwork machine throughout the tournament last year – but as Bayern Munich’s midfield enforcer arguably acted as the glue that held all his teammates together in Brazil – Schweinsteiger could viably take the lion’s share of the credit for his nation’s triumph.

Manchester United fans could therefore be forgiven for their excitement in light of Louis van Gaal’s reported interest in the German international. The player himself hasn’t categorically linked himself with a move away from the Allianz Arena this summer, yet as this is the ever-changing world of modern day transfer speculation we are talking about here, one can seemingly never say never in these kinds of scenarios.

Even with that particular notion on board though – do Manchester United actually have what it takes to land Bastian Schweinsteiger this summer, or is this specific deal ultimately one that will never even get off the ground?

With Bayern Munich seemingly winning all there is to win domestically in the Bundesliga in recent years – yet still somehow falling short in the Champions League under Pep Guardiola – perhaps now is actually quite an opportune moment for the Red Devils to follow through in their reported admiration of the German midfielder.

If history is to count for anything in the modern game, Louis van Gaal could arguably stand a strong chance of signing his former player if things work out well for his side this summer. The enigmatic Dutch boss famously moved Schweinsteiger away from his previous role out on the flanks for Bayern, and gave him the responsibility of playing in the middle of the park with great success.

Since making that transformation in his style of play, the composed 30-year-old has since flourished in his new position and become one of the stand out performers in the whole of world football. Bastian Schweinsteiger therefore owes Louis van Gaal a certain amount for improving his fortunes in the modern game.

The new captain of the German national side has turned into a shrewd ball winner in the middle of the park, a visionary passer all across the pitch, and a leader worthy of taking games by the scruff of the neck and dictating proceedings for his respective sides.

Yes, injuries have somewhat plagued the Bayern Munich man throughout the course of this past season, and of course, at 30-years-old Schweinsteiger wouldn’t exactly represent a signing for the future at Old Trafford – but as he nonetheless commands a huge role for Pep Guardiola’s team still to this day, there is ultimately very little doubt over the player’s overall quality.

Whilst the marauding midfielder therefore seemingly goes down as the perfect transfer target for Manchester United next season – someone to inject some real experience and know-how into this current Red Devils side which is somewhat lacking in both of those departments – question marks still remain over whether or not this particular deal would ever take place.

Louis van Gaal’s side could obviously afford the German box-to-box man with the amount of cash they’ve been splashing about of late, but would Bayern Munich ultimately be willing to let their main man go so easily this summer? The answer could well be, no.

Pep Guardiola has already presided over the loss of Toni Kroos at the Allianz since he first joined up with the Bundesliga giants, and with Manchester United themselves clearly lacking the same overall strength in depth as Bayern going into the new season, it seems unlikely that Bastian Schweinsteiger would ever want to move to Old Trafford on a personal level as well.

Ultimately it seems like this particular transfer story will amount to nothing more than pure speculation and loose talk with the 2015/16 campaign already fast approaching. Yes, the Red Devils would be greatly improved with the World Cup winner on board, but at this stage in the proceedings such an outcome seemingly remains doubtful at best.
