With the score at 0-0 against Watford, Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard found himself through on goal, having been played in behind the defence.
Ben Foster was at the 27-year-old’s mercy as he approached the goal, with it seeming inevitable that the ball would end up rustling in the back of the Vicarage Road net.
He could have attempted to slip the ball past the goalkeeper on either side, or even tried to take him on, but opted for the chip.

It would have looked great had it gone in, but he slightly overcooked it, with the ball ending up on the upper side of the net.
This wasn’t a shocking effort, but it did highlight that Lingard, who came through the club’s academy, is lacking a clinical edge that is needed from attacking players in top Premier League teams.
That point is only accentuated by his miss in the early stages of the draw against Everton in the game prior, when his shot on the turn from near the penalty spot rolled harmlessly wide.
This means that he is without a Premier League goal since December 2018, something that indicates he simply must become more clinical if he is to keep his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.
A real test for any fan: Can you name all of these obscure Man Utd signings?
It can be suggested that his position will be under even more threat now that Paul Pogba is available again, having made his return from injury when replacing the England international in the 64th minute.
Whether he will start against Newcastle United on Boxing Day or not is unknown, but if he does, Lingard simply must show more of a clinical edge than he has done in recent games.
