Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has endured his fair share of criticism in recent years and both ends of the spectrum of his ability were shown last night, caught out for David Luiz’ free-kick but then saving a Diego Costa penalty.Whilst he still remains inconsistent, the crucial penalty save in the second-half of Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Anfield last night sees the Belgian stopper snatch an impressive statistic- achieving something that has not been done this side of the millennia.
Having previously saved a penalty from Arsenal’s Theo Walcott on the opening day of the season, Mignolet has become the first premier League goalkeeper to save a penalty from the Gunners and Chelsea for the first time since the 1998/99 season.
John Filan was the last man to achieve such a feat, when the Australian goalkeeper played for Blackburn Rovers, and the impressive accomplishment from Mignolet shows he’s a forced to be reckoned with when it comes to spot-kicks.
