He opened the scoring for the Reds in a comfortable 3-1 victory over J1 League side Yokohama F Marinos in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday. Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha were the other scorers for the English side.

Trailing by a goal early in the second half against Yokohama, Curtis Jones made a run from the right side. The midfielder entered the penalty area and exchanged a quick one-two with Mohamed Salah, before Wirtz found himself in a comfortable shooting range. The German sensation swept the ball into the far corner with a perfectly executed first-time shot to open his Liverpool goal account, and Arne Slot's side went on to win 3-1 at the Nissan Stadium.

Doubts were cast over Wednesday's pre-season friendly in Yokohama after a tsunami alert was issued in Hawaii, the United States and Japan following an earthquake with an 8.8 magnitude that hit Russia's east coast. The match, however, was given the green light to go ahead as public transportation was functioning normally in the city.
